A special unit of the Spanish police intercepted a merchant ship that was transporting about 6.5 tons of cocaine off the Canary Islands and arrested nine crew members, the police said.
The statement said that the intercepted ship had sailed from the Panamanian port of Cristobal Anch and was sailing under the flag of Tanzania towards the Spanish port of Vigo on the Atlantic Ocean.
The police received the first information on October 8 from the US Drug Enforcement Agency, and in the evening hours of October 22, an operation was carried out to board a merchant ship, which was intercepted by the Spanish Navy.
Police did not release the ages or nationalities of those arrested.
This is one of the largest anti-drug operations carried out by state security forces in Spain in recent years, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE reported.
