The woman who was killed by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis in the United States of America has been identified as Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three.
Good was a US citizen, award-winning poet and hobbyist guitarist who moved to Minneapolis last year. According to officials, at the time of her death she was present as a legal observer during the ICE raid in the south of the city – a volunteer whose task is to monitor the actions of the police and ensure that the legal rights of citizens are respected.
The case sparked mass protests across the US, with accusations of police brutality, abuse of authority and irresponsible use of force by federal agents.
The Trump administration, however, presented a completely different version of events. President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Good interfered with police officers.
Noem said Good blocked the agents with her vehicle, yelled at them and tried to run over one officer, causing the agent to shoot.
On the other hand, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly rejected the claims. After he said he personally viewed the video of the incident, Frey said the agent acted recklessly.
“This was an agent who used his power irresponsibly, resulting in the death and murder of one person,” Frey said.
Renee Good’s family denied the White House’s allegations. Her mother, Donna Ganger, said her daughter did not provoke the attack on ICE agents. She described her as an extremely compassionate person who cared for others her whole life.
More than $370,000 was raised for the family of Renee Good in just ten hours. Protests were held on the streets of numerous American cities, and the demonstrators carried banners with the message “Justice for Renee”.
Good was killed just a few blocks from her home, in an area not far from where George Floyd was killed in 2020, an event that sparked global protests against police brutality and racism.
