Hundreds of police officers are searching for the gunman who killed two people and wounded nine others at Brown University, putting the campus on lockdown.
The streets around the university in Providence, Rhode Island, were filled with emergency vehicles hours after a gunman opened fire in a building where exams were held on Saturday.
Eight hours after the shooting, the suspect was still at large, while about 400 police officers, including FBI agents and members of campus police, searched the university grounds.
The victims are mostly students
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said at a press conference that two people were killed, while eight others were wounded in critical but stable condition.
A ninth person, who suffered gunshot wounds, was later taken to a hospital, authorities said.
Brown University President Christina Paxson said at a late-night briefing that ten of the 11 victims were among students.
Witnesses describe panic
Witness Katie Sun told the Brown Daily Herald student newspaper that she was in a nearby building when she heard the gunshots, after which she ran into the dorm, leaving her personal belongings behind.
– Honestly, it was quite scary. It seemed like the shots were coming from where the classrooms are – she said.
Police released a 10-second clip of the suspect walking briskly through deserted streets, taken from behind after he opened fire in a first-floor classroom.

Another in a series of attacks on schools in the USA
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on educational institutions in the United States, where efforts to restrict access to firearms have faced political setbacks.
“My heart breaks for the students who were looking forward to the holiday break and instead are faced with another horrific mass shooting,” Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said on the X social network.
