According to the indictments of the Prosecutor’s Office of Tuzla Canton, a total of 440 years of imprisonment were imposed during 2025 for various criminal offenses. 9 and a half thousand new cases were opened, while about 10 and a half thousand cases were resolved, which is about 700 cases more than last year. The resolution plan for cases older than six months is 93 percent. However, the extremely high percentage of non-investigation orders is worrying. Namely, 2,868 orders not to conduct the investigation and 448 orders to suspend the investigation were passed.
The fight against organized crime and corruption this year was the main priority for the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office in Tuzla. Last year, 24 indictments were filed, and these two indictments are more from that area, while another indictment against organized crime is expected by the end of the year. The Prosecutor’s Office says that politics cannot affect their work and says that there are no untouchables.
“Politics has not been able to have any influence until now. This is what our actions say. If we look at the affiliation of certain persons whom we have prosecuted or who are prosecuting, to certain political groups or parties, it can be seen that this prosecution is working to prosecute all those who are criminally responsible. And not who belongs to whom, to which political party,” emphasized Vedran Alidžanović, chief prosecutor of the TK Prosecutor’s Office.
Two subjects stand out in particular. The arrest of police officers suspected of human trafficking, i.e. the exploitation of minors for the purpose of prostitution and the fire in the Tuzla Retirement Home in which 17 people died. The first phase of the investigation in both cases has been completed. The investigation is expected to expand, and new arrests are possible.
“The attitude of the Police Administration and the MUP is to go to the end with this and to clean up everything that is really ugly, based on that we are losing the trust of the citizens. And this should be done to the end, and everything should be brought to an end, no matter who it was. Whether it was an officer or an ordinary policeman, any other citizen who is involved in this will be justly sanctioned,” said Nedžad Bistrić, the Minister of Internal Affairs of the TK.
“They are investigating what happened. And I hope that it will be prosecuted and that those responsible will receive adequate punishments. No matter how guilty he is. If I am also guilty of that, here, I am making myself available, if I am guilty even for one second,” said Elvin Ovčina, manager for quality and standards of the Tuzla Retirement Home.
The public expects the judiciary to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and moral integrity in these cases. Any possible concessions to politics or political powerful would only undermine the integrity of the judiciary and significantly undermine citizens’ trust in the professional work of the judiciary.
