After the initial information about one victim of the tram accident in Milan, that number is growing. At least two people were killed and around 40 injured after an overcrowded tram derailed in the northern Italian city of Milan on Friday, local authorities said.
The tram was traveling at high speed along the central street of Vittorio Veneto around 15:00 GMT when it is believed to have hit the side of a building, breaking a shop window and eventually coming to rest after hitting a tree.
According to local reports, the first victim was found under the tram, while most of the injured were passengers.
“We have to wait to understand how such a serious incident could have happened…unfortunately, according to the first reports, one person was killed, while another was seriously injured,” said regional councilor for social welfare Guido Bertolaso.
A second person died after being hospitalized in serious condition, authorities added later Friday.
Numerous ambulance and fire engines immediately arrived at the scene of the accident.
The commercial and business center of Italy is currently booked with seasonal fashion shows, after successfully hosting the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and just before the start of the Paralympic Games.
