In the collision of two high-speed trains in Adamuz, not far from Cordoba in Spain, at least 39 people died and more than 75 were injured. The tragic accident happened when one train jumped out and crossed onto the adjacent track.
The accident happened on Sunday around 19:40 when the last three carriages of the Iryo train, which was traveling with 317 passengers on the Málaga-Madrid route, derailed at the entrance switches in Adamuz. The carriages moved onto the adjacent track, which at that moment was being driven by a Renfe train from Madrid to Huelva in the opposite direction, at about 200 km/h, which caused it to derail.
The drama unfolded in moments that for many passengers seemed like a scene from a disaster movie. María San José (33), a passenger on the first train that derailed, described the moment of the accident to the newspaper El País. “There are many injured – I’m still shaking,” she said, adding that people were screaming and trying to understand what was happening as the train braked suddenly and began to overturn.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote in a post on X that this was a “night of deep sadness” and expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. “No words can ease such suffering, but I want you to know that the whole nation is with you in these very difficult times.”
The company said it deeply regrets what happened and has activated all emergency protocols to work closely with the relevant authorities.
