Three paintings by French masters Cezanne, Renoir and Matisse were stolen from a museum near Parma in northern Italy. Thieves stole several paintings worth millions of euros from the museum of the Magnani Rocca Foundation, the police confirmed.
The robbery took place in less than three minutes on the night of March 22-23.
They stole “Fish” by Auguste Renoir, “Still Life with Cherries” by Paul Cezanne and “Odalisque on the Terrace” by Henri Matisse. Local media reported that the thieves broke down the door, stole the paintings and escaped through the museum’s gardens.
The suspects were wearing hoods to disguise themselves, the Unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Carabinieri police said, and that they were reviewing footage from the museum’s surveillance cameras and footage from local businesses.
A “structured and organized” gang is believed to be responsible for the theft.
The theft in Parma comes after a series of high-profile robberies at major European museums, including an incident in October when thieves stole 88 million euros in jewels and other objects from Paris’s Louvre, DW reports.
