The Municipal Court in Tuzla, in a renewed civil proceeding, rendered a verdict by which the doctors of the Clinic for Internal Diseases of the University Medical Center Tuzla, Midhat Hajder and Alma Halilbašić-Smajić, were found guilty of the death of Amira Selimović, her husband Senad Selimović said.
Namely, as explained by Senad Selimović, everything they pointed out earlier – including the fact that Amira died two hours after her discharge – was confirmed by this verdict.
“The court found that during the admission and discharge, not even a minimum of findings were made, that the examination and discharge was performed by a doctor in specialization Alma Halilbašić-Smajić, with a total of three months of work experience, who was not authorized or qualified to do so, and that the said doctors are responsible for the death of Amira Selimović, who died two hours after her discharge at the age of 55, and who left behind two sons, one of whom was 15 years old,” he said. Selimović.
According to him, the court also confirmed other claims that the Selimović family made earlier, including that they gave Amira Selimović stomach pills and let her go home, where she unfortunately died two hours later.
“It was established that death occurred as a result of a series of omissions in her treatment, as a result of the gross negligence of the doctors on duty and the medical error they committed. It was also established that Alma Halilbašić-Smajić, three months after starting her first employment relationship, regardless of the available findings of the Emergency Department (irregular EKG, heart rate 115, oxygen saturation 80%), which indicated that this was an extremely urgent patient with severe with hypoxia/hypoxemia, which required urgent treatment and hospitalization, decided to prescribe symptomatic therapy (infusion and Controloc for stomach ailments) and discharge Amira, all of which indicates insufficient expertise in treatment and treatment by Dr. Halilbašić-Smajić.
In the end, he pointed out that the court established that Halilbašić-Smajić was undergoing specialization and performed procedures for which she was not authorized, while Midhat Haider, as the doctor on duty that evening, failed to do what he was responsible for.
“The court concluded that the doctor’s mistakes are not only professional and procedural errors, but that they together constitute medical error and gross negligence, which was the key cause of Amira’s death,” stated Senad Selimović.
