False reports about planted bombs recently again disturbed students, parents and teachers in the Tuzla Canton, but also beyond. The threats were sent via e-mail to the addresses of more than a hundred schools, and a large number of police and security agencies were involved in the investigation. Such cases, experts warn, leave serious consequences for society, while institutions work in parallel to prevent other forms of risky behavior among young people.
Reports of planted bombs were recently received in elementary schools in Tuzla, Lukavac, Gradačac, Živinice, Kalesija, Kladnje. The applications arrived via a threatening e-mail. The competent institutions have been informed about everything, and the investigation is ongoing. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the most common motive is to empty the facilities, so that they stop functioning and working.
“The second motive is that it causes the emergence of emergency services, primarily police officers, some other emergency services, and this often implies material, financial and human resources, and it is dangerous in itself to falsely report such bombs,” said Admir Arnautović, the spokesperson of the Tuzla Canton Prosecutor’s Office.
The authorities say that prevention, timely reaction and cooperation of family, school and system are key in the fight against risky behavior, and they appeal to the perpetrators of these crimes to be aware of the serious consequences of false reports. From a psychological point of view, there are several motives for such actions.
“To cause fear, panic, for something to be disturbed, and we as a society have been living under some kind of fear for years. Then to draw attention to oneself. Maybe someone lacks attention, so they think they will get it in such a way,” says psychotherapist Vahida Djedović.
Nine reports of planted bombs were recorded this year. It was mostly about reports addressed to schools, and in one case to a Municipal Court.
“This year, together with the police agencies and the MUP of the Tuzla Canton, we discovered four perpetrators. In all four cases, we are dealing with juvenile perpetrators and preliminary proceedings have been opened against them,” Arnautović points out.
In addition to reports of bombs, the Tuzla Canton is also faced with other forms of risky behavior among young people, which the Training Center tackles. In this year, they had more than 60 requests from centers for social work for preventive treatments and execution of educational measures. Among them is manslaughter committed by a minor.
“Violent behavior, banditry, light and serious physical injuries, theft of other people’s property, sexual intercourse with a child, abuse of the sign for help and danger, serious theft,” says Faruk Durmić, director of the Tuzla Canton Judiciary Center.
When we talk about false reports, they are not a joke, but a criminal offense that interrupts classes and burdens the services, and children and parents feel the consequences the most. In addition to investigations and prosecutions, prevention and the joint work of schools, families and institutions remain key, so that such cases are reduced to a minimum and safety in schools remains a priority.
