Caution due to geopolitical tensions

Geopolitical tensions marked trade on world stock markets in the second week of 2026.

It was traded cautiously, so most of the stock market indices did not register major movements.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones index lost 0.3 percent last week, to 49,358 points, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.4 percent, to 6,940 points, and the Nasdaq index lost 0.7 percent, to 23,515 points.

Investors are cautious as US President Donald Trump continues to insist on taking control of Greenland. Trump claims that Greenland is crucial to US security because of its strategic location and large mineral reserves.

On Friday, he threatened to introduce tariffs on imports from those countries that will oppose his plans, and he did not rule out the use of force to occupy Greenland.

European countries, on the other hand, sent a certain number of military personnel to the island last week at the request of Denmark.

The Dow Jones and the S&P 500 index slipped from record levels and because the financial sector came under pressure, after Trump said that interest rates on credit cards should be limited to 10 percent, reports SEEbiz.

As a result, even the share prices of several banks that reported better-than-expected quarterly business results last week+ fell.

On the other hand, markets were supported by a rise in share prices of chipmakers, after Taiwan’s TSMC reported record revenues and earnings, showing that demand for artificial intelligence development chips remains strong.
