The High Court in Bijelo Polje today sentenced Alija Balijagić to 40 years in prison for the murder of Jovan (60) and Milenka Madžgalj (69) in the Bijelo Polje village of Sokolac on October 25 last year, this judicial institution announced.
Prosecutor Vanja Rakonjac said at the hearing on Friday, November 5, when the closing arguments were given, that all the presented evidence confirmed that Balijagić had committed the crime, which he admitted to and described in detail.
She noted that Balijagić, as confirmed by the report of a psychiatrist and psychologist, was in a sane state at the time of the murder.
Rakonjac stated that Balijagić described that he came to the house of his brother and sister Madžgalj when it got dark, took a concrete block and placed it under the window, climbed up and watched the victims.
“At the moment when Jovan got up and took the remote control from the television, Balijagić shot while facing him, pointing out that he shot Milenko because she called the police, and that he fired the second bullet for humanitarian reasons,” said Rakonjac.
She recalled that Balijagić stated in his statement that he shot Jovan because he was rude to him and that he had previously chased him away from the house and told him “to get lost so he wouldn’t see him again”, but that from the presented evidence it follows that he committed the crime in an insidious and cold-blooded manner, at a time when the victims did not expect it, and that he acted with direct intent.
“In the DNA examination of the forensic center, Balijagić’s traces were found on parts of the window, glass, tissue on the floor, a drawer, the floor, a plastic bucket with cheese,” said Rakonjac, who asked for the strictest punishment under the law for Balijagić.
On March 17, Balijagić was extradited to Montenegro from Serbia, whose security forces arrested him on November 21, 2024.
