In the area of Visoko, at the end of last month, a child of preschool age died due to meningococcal sepsis, and all epidemiological guidelines and recommendations are being implemented for persons who were in contact as well.
This information was confirmed for Faktor by the Institute for Health and Food Safety in Zenica, stating that on Wednesday, February 25 this year in the area of Visoko, a death was recorded due to a reported case of meningococcal sepsis in a preschool child, six and a half years old.
– Competent services of the Visoko Health Center, immediately after receiving the information, carried out comprehensive epidemiological investigations. All identified close contacts in Visoko were promptly covered by appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis, in accordance with valid epidemiological guidelines and expert recommendations – the Institute added.
They emphasized that the child did not attend elementary school, even though he lived in a neighborhood from which a certain number of children attend one of the elementary schools in the area of Visoko.
– All persons who had any contact with the child were identified, and all necessary examinations were performed. Up to this moment, there are no new suspected or confirmed cases related to the mentioned event. Disinfection of all areas was also carried out, but as a preventive measure also the school near the place of residence of this child, in which, according to the information we have, classes take place online due to a technical failure in the heating system – say the Institute.
They point out that eight minors, thirteen other family members, and fourteen health workers who were in contact with the child and the family received protective therapies.
– As a preventive measure, health surveillance has been intensified for 21 days, with the delivery of informative instructions to the school and parents about the symptoms that need to be paid attention to, and about the way to act in the event of possible health problems. Once again, we underline that the competent institutions continuously and timely monitor the situation and take adequate steps. The Institute for Health and Food Safety remains in constant coordination with the Visoko Health Center and the school management, with the aim of timely, professional and responsible communication. At the moment, it is a preventive and advisory procedure, aimed at reducing concerns and providing accurate information to parents and teaching staff – the Institute for Food Safety Zenica stated.
