Not a single passenger train runs through the Tuzla Canton, ending the hundred-year tradition of transporting passengers by rail in this most populous part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 2012, when they canceled the passenger train on the Tuzla-Brčko-Tuzla route, the Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina have withdrawn all passenger cars from Tuzla to Sarajevo and have not returned them to this day. Namely, the only relic of passenger rail traffic in Tuzla was the Tuzla-Doboj-Tuzla passenger train, which was maintained by the RS Railways until the end of 2019.

“After the devastating Second World War, construction, reconstruction and industrialization followed. The railway has been a symbol of progress and prosperity since the time of the English Industrial Revolution. Generations of our parents and grandparents worked hard to establish the railway network. They worked wholeheartedly believing in a better tomorrow. The Brčko-Banovići railway is legendary and well-known. The railway network still exists today, but the rails on the tracks are corroded, and the trains have stopped rattling for a long time. Generations of young people have been denied the wonderful experience of train travel; it was more than a trip. Therefore, I am launching an initiative for the competent services to start railway passenger traffic on the route Tuzla-Živinice-Banovići, and to plan other road railway sections, e.g. Tuzla-Brčko, Tuzla-Doboj and others. Then build the Banovici-Vares railway, which would connect it to Sarajevo at the far end of Tuzla,” Strašević said.
He further states that all the necessary infrastructure on the Tuzla-Živinice-Banovići route already exists, as well as the need for traffic revitalization.
“The railway would bring the necessary liveliness and dynamism, and travel for students, pupils, workers and other citizens would be much easier. Our three cities would be connected by railway, which would create realistic assumptions about the development of the megapolis in the future. We don’t have a metro, trams, but we have a realistic assumption that we have a road railway composition. The landscapes through which the railway passes are so fairytale-like and offer great opportunities for the development of tourism. The benefits of starting a passenger train on the route Tuzla-Živinice-Banovići are huge and can be seen from different aspects. In the end, I would like to emphasize that it is necessary to preserve and develop existing resources with, it seems to me, a necessary note: starting trains would show the strength of our vitality as a society and a strong commitment to industrialization, which is certainly one of the prerequisites for a better tomorrow,” he said. is in the Initiative dr.
