The text The Merchant of Sarajevo by Igor Štiks, who is one of the most awarded and performed Bosnian writers, was written especially for the National Theatre, and this will be the third premiere of the NPS Drama in the 2024/25 artistic season.
According to the artistic director of Drama NPS, Vedrana Božinović, this play is the result of many years of planning and agreement. “It is our honor and pleasure that, after the best directors of the region directed in our house, we have now brought Michal Dočekal, a Czech director, artistic director of the Prague theater and an extremely renowned and well-known European director.”
“I believe that this combination will bring a great and interesting show to our house. The Sarajevo Merchant is a story about the Sarajevo Haggadah, about its survival through wars and the people who made that survival possible, but it is also about Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and about how much we have really preserved the multiculturalism that we have always been very fond of. proud,” adds Vedrana Božinović.
The cast consists of: Mirvad Kurić, Amina Begović, Milan Pavlović, Riad Ljutović, Vedran Čekić, Dino Bajrović, Mona Muratović, Nermina Mahmutović, Irfan Ribić, Sara Seksan, Sanjin Arnautović, Belma Salkunić Bektešević, Faruk Hajdarević, Alen Konjicija and Haris Bidžan.
Playwright is Giorgio Ursini, scenographer David Marek, costume designer Lejla Hodžić. The composer is Mirza Redžepagić, the video design is signed by Dino Hujć, and the light design is by Moamer Šaković‡.
“It has often been said that local writers are not respected enough, and that is exactly why we decided to take this step, as a theater that, in our opinion, should nurture local writers and authors in general, but also as a home and which, due to its status and reputation, must set standards. The extraordinary cast of the NPS ensemble is once again filled with our young colleagues, actresses and actors who are the future of the theater in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and who we have given the opportunity to start their professional careers in the oldest theater house in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Together with the whole team, I am looking forward to the fact that, even in these financially extremely difficult and uncertain times, we can start making a truly great show.” – concluded Vedrana Božinović.
By the way, in the past four seasons, Drama NPS had at least one text by a local writer, while this season is entirely dedicated to local authors.
