The reporting units were business entities and parts of business entities that were registered as waste collectors according to the Classification of Activities (KD BiH 2010) classified in the activity area E – Water supply, waste water removal, waste management and environmental rehabilitation activities.
Of the total amount of waste collected in 2023, 79.7 percent was collected from the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, imports from other countries amounted to 3.1 percent, and the stored amount amounted to 17.2 percent.
According to the method of waste management, 17.2 percent was temporarily stored, 19.7 percent was processed, 0.4 percent was removed and 62.6 percent was handed over to another business entity for further processing and disposal.
Business entities that process and dispose of waste show the amounts of waste that were taken over from others in the reference period with the intention of further waste management.
Directives and laws of the European Union, and above all Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste, establish the principle of “producer’s extended responsibility”, to recycle and use packaging waste generated on the market after the consumption of their products.
Observing the period 2014-2023, as stated by the BiH Statistics Agency, the trend shows an increase in the total amount of collected waste, as well as the amount handed over to others for management.
Significant amounts of waste materials were also imported and processed.
