On May 23, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly passed the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica, which establishes July 11 as the “International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide Committed in Srebrenica in 1995”.
The General Assembly of the United Nations referred to the judgments of the International Court of Justice and the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
The resolution declared July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide committed in Srebrenica in 1995, which will be celebrated every year. It also condemns any denial of the genocide in Srebrenica and calls on all countries to prevent genocide denial by preserving established facts, including through their educational systems. . The resolution condemns the glorification of convicted war criminals.
It also emphasizes the importance of completing the process of finding and identifying the remaining victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
The resolution reminds all states of their obligations from the Convention on Genocide, which include preventing and punishing genocide, and respecting the relevant decisions of the International Court of Justice. Srebrenica was thus returned to the global scene – a symbol of the fight for justice, truth, reconciliation, learning, prevention of genocide and ultimately a symbol of the fight against the denial of genocide. No one can escape from that anymore.
By adopting the Resolution, an important message was sent to humanity. The UN must not forget the final judgments of its courts on the genocide in Srebrenica. They should be a constant warning to humanity.
The resolution is a new chance for catharsis and a civilized settlement with those responsible for the committed genocide. The genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica in the heart of Europe must not be forgotten or denied. By remembering, we preserve the dignity of the victims and fight for a safe future for new generations.
Our obligation to the victims, their families and future generations is a civilizational one, and together we must fight against forgetting and denial.
The integration of the Resolution into the education system provides the foundations for building a society based on respect for diversity, justice and reconciliation, thus contributing to the long-term preservation of peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, stated the statement of the Canadian Genocide Research Institute.
