Heroji.ba: Online map and registry of martyrs and fallen defenders available to the public

Through the interactive platform, available at www.heroji.ba, in the 3D map of martyrs’ cemeteries, it is now possible to view martyrs’ cemeteries throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as each individual grave of martyrs and Army veterans along with their biographies and photos.

So far, the mapping of cemeteries in Sarajevo, Prijedor, Goražde, Olov and Brčko District has been completed, and the platform currently contains data for more than 8,500 martyrs and veterans.

– During 2023, we mapped 40 martyrs’ cemeteries in Sarajevo, while during 2024, another 33 cemeteries were covered in the regions of Prijedor, Brčko, Goražde and Olovo. The next phase of the project is planned for 2025, when we plan to work in the areas of the Banja Luka region, Tuzla Canton and Una-Sana Canton. Our goal is to complete the database and map of martyrs’ cemeteries for the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the end of next year – announced Ahmed Kulanić, director of the Sarajevo Memorial Center.

As he said, apart from the effort to preserve all information about martyrs and veterans in one place, the importance of this project is also in passing on national history to the younger generations.

– The significance of the “heroji.ba” platform is that it becomes an integral part of our permanent national memory. In addition, aware of the times we live in, the digital environment and our students who find knowledge more and more on the Internet, we wanted to offer content that would attract them, encourage them to learn about the heroes of our homeland, those who are responsible for our homeland, in a simple and a way close to them. Our ultimate goal is for the heroji.ba platform to become an integral part of our collective consciousness, a tool for education and a reminder of our history – Kulanić added.

A call to families and the community

In order to enrich the map with as much content and information as possible, the Sarajevo Memorial Center invites the families of martyrs and fallen veterans, as well as all those who have photos, personal records or documents of the martyrs and veterans of the Army, to submit them to the Sarajevo Memorial Center.

– Some data are really hard to come by, and every piece of information we receive from families and loved ones is important to us because it gives a more complete overview of each of our fighters, the possibility to, on the one hand, save as much data as possible, and on the other hand, an opportunity for all of us to get to know them as well as possible. This is the least we owe them – Kulanić said.

All collected materials will enrich the platform, and data, biographies, photos and documents can be entered directly on the platform www.heroji.ba or deliver to the Memorial Center by e-mail [email protected].
