“Please know that I fully understand how much pain such events cause victims and survivors, as well as their families and communities. Celebrating and elevating content that diminishes the importance and distorts the image of the crimes committed in Ahmići, as well as unfounded challenges to the judgments of the ICTY, such as you stated, is not only disturbing, but also very demeaning to the victims. It is worrying that high-ranking officials participate in such events, and thus seem to support them revisionist narratives,” Brammertz wrote, adding:
“As I have stated on countless occasions so far, the glorification of war criminals, the denial of internationally recognized facts and the continuation of revisionist narratives undermine efforts aimed at reconciliation and achieving justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I will continue to engage with the relevant domestic authorities and our international partners in with the aim of ensuring that such attempts to belittle the victims and undermine responsibility and the rule of law in Bosnia and Herzegovina are presented in an appropriate manner”.
Brammertz states that his Office will monitor and report on activities aimed at glorifying war criminals and denying established crimes in regular reporting to the United Nations Security Council, and that he emphasizes, as this specific example you cite proves, the urgent need for decisive action in order to suppress such negative developments.
