The German stock market ended the last trading day of the year strongly, with the leading index DAX rising above 24,500 points at one point, to close at 24,490.41 points.
This brought the Frankfurt index closer to its record level of 24,771 points, set in October.
During this month, the DAX recorded a growth of 2.7 percent, which enabled it to achieve the best annual result since 2019, with a total growth of 23 percent. It thus surpassed the leading index of the Eurozone, Euro Stoxx, as well as the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the United States, Seebiz.eu reports.
In shortened trading on Tuesday, the books for the year closed as early as 2pm (1pm GMT).
Many investors stayed out of the market in the period between Christmas and New Year, which led to a low volume of trading, and therefore to more pronounced price oscillations for certain stocks.
The strong performance of the DAX is in sharp contrast to the economic slowdown in Germany. However, investors often focus not on the current situation, but on expected future profits. Additionally, the 40 companies included in the DAX are strongly internationally oriented and generate most of their revenue in foreign markets.
Market analyst Thomas Altman from the company QC Partners assessed the year as extremely successful, but emphasized that this mainly refers to the first half of the year, while the second half was marked, as he stated, by “more lateral movement”.
Out of a total of 34 record highs, the DAX recorded as many as 31 in the first half of the year, while only three were achieved in the second half of the year.
The index of mid-sized companies MDAX increased on Tuesday by 0.54 percent, to 30,617.67 points. Thus, this index achieved a growth of 2.3 percent in December and almost 20 percent at the level of the entire year 2025, reports Seebiz.eu
