Noelia Castillo Ramos, 25, from Barcelona, died by euthanasia on Thursday night, the hospital confirmed.
Noelia Castillo Ramos was raped twice, once by her ex-boyfriend, and the second time by three young men in 2022, after which she tried to commit suicide, reports Sky News.
In 2022, she tried to commit suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the building, as a result of which she became a paraplegic. Medical reports stated that Noelia was suffering from severe and chronic pain in her back and legs, which is why she decided to euthanize her.
“I want to go now in peace and stop suffering, period,” said Noelia in the only interview for Spanish television.
She lived in a nursing home in Barcelona, and as the media reports, she claimed that “from the beginning she was very clear about her wish to die.”
“No one in my family supports euthanasia. But what about all the pain I suffered all these years,” Noelia said, adding that her world was “very dark.”
A two-year legal battle
Her euthanasia request was initially granted in July 2024, but her father blocked it.
He claimed that her mental state affected her ability to make a decision, but after almost two years of court proceedings, Spain’s Constitutional Court rejected his appeal.
He also appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, but he also rejected the request to stop the euthanasia.
In 2021, Spain legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide for people with incurable or serious illnesses.
The law was passed despite strong opposition from conservative parties and the Catholic Church.
