The man who opened fire at the White House Correspondents’ Gala last night is not your typical criminal with a record. It is about 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen, an engineer and programmer from Southern California who until yesterday was teaching math to children and developing video games, reports CNN.
Allen lives in Torrance, a quiet suburb of Los Angeles, and the police identified him as the only suspect immediately after the attack at the Washington Hilton hotel. While the agents were pulling Donald Trump and the other guests out of the hall, they overpowered Allen in the lobby, who was armed to the teeth.
From exemplary teacher to striker
His resume, at least the one publicly available, portrays him as above average intelligent and successful. Allen worked as an instructor at the company “C2 Education”, where he helped students prepare for difficult exams. How good he was at this is best shown by the fact that in December 2024, the company declared him “Teacher of the Month” and publicly praised him on social networks.
Innovated wheelchair brakes and donated to the Kamala Harris campaign
Even as a student, he filled the columns of local newspapers, but in a completely different context. He was then celebrated as a young innovator who devised an emergency braking system for wheelchairs. Nothing in his past indicated that a few years later he would be storming a presidential dinner with a shotgun and knives.
As for political preferences, records show that in October 2024, he contributed $25 to the campaign of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

In his spare time, Allen dabbled in programming. On the famous platform for gamers, Steam, he published his first independent game “Bohrdom”, which he sold for a pittance. On his profile, he proudly pointed out that he is already working on a new project, a game with the working name “First Law”.
Although he was respected in his community, the question now arises as to what happened in the head of a man who had a career, education and recognition from the environment.
