A man in Germany stole an excavator and drove it from Grünsfeld to Tauberbischofsheim (in Baden-Württemberg). The police tried to stop him, but to no avail. They ended up shooting him. He died on the spot, writes Bild.
After stealing an excavator, he crashed into buildings and vehicles, damaged four police cars and injured three policemen.
According to available information, the man stole an excavator from the construction site of a construction company in Grünsfeld around 1:35 p.m. and then drove off towards Tauberbischofsheim. Several police patrols tried to stop the excavator. Bild writes that there was an exchange of fire between the attacker and the police, in which the attacker was killed. The incident lasted a total of 52 minutes, reports Bild.
38-year-old German citizen
So far, there is no information about who the man who stole the excavator is or about the motives of the attack. It is only known that he is a 38-year-old man who is a German citizen. It is currently unclear whether the man worked for the construction company whose property he wreaked havoc on. The police do not believe that the motive was political in nature.
The police union (GdP) praised the operation during the afternoon. GdP Vice President Thomas Mohr said: “The forces on the ground acted professionally in an extremely dynamic and dangerous situation and thus prevented an even worse outcome. It is tragic that a human life was ultimately lost, but the police had a responsibility to prevent further casualties and ensure the safety of the population. Our emergency services deserve a lot of credit for that.”
