Four hundred and sixteen people were arrested in France, including 283 in the Paris metropolitan area, and seven police officers were injured, including one seriously in Agen, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced on Saturday night after riots marked PSG’s Champions League victory celebrations.
The minister condemned the incidents as ‘absolutely unacceptable’.
Paris Saint-Germain FC won its second consecutive European title, after which a great celebration began in the French capital. About 20,000 people gathered on the prestigious Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris on Saturday night, a usual place for celebrations and gatherings in the capital, and the celebrations were marked by riots and clashes with the police. Various objects were thrown at the police near the avenue, and there were also incidents near the Porte de Saint-Cloud district near the Parc des Princes, the PSG stadium where the final was broadcast on big screens in front of more than 48,000 fans.
According to the police report, six vehicles and two business buildings were damaged – one bakery and one restaurant.
Accustomed to violent clashes that often overshadow major events, France has deployed 22,000 police officers to maintain order in the capital. Last year, two people died and almost 200 were injured after PSG won the Champions League for the first time.
