The price of bitcoin fell to its lowest level in more than a year

The value of bitcoin has fallen to its lowest level since Donald Trump returned to the White House a little over a year ago.

This wiped out all the gains that the cryptocurrency made thanks to optimism about the arrival of a president who is in favor of digital money, writes Bloomberg.

The largest cryptocurrency continued its four-month slide, falling below $74,424, which was the lowest point in 2025. That earlier decline came in April, when Trump’s announcement of new tariffs rattled global markets.

“Many investors bought while the price was falling, hoping for a quick recovery,” said Bohan Jiang of FalconX. As the price continued to sink, the forced sale (liquidation) of their positions was activated, which created additional pressure and brought down the price even faster.

Today, bitcoin fell by as much as 7 percent, to $72,877. Although it later returned part of the value to 76,000 dollars, since the beginning of this year, bitcoin is in the red by almost 14 percent, reports Index.hr.

Despite the support from the White House, bitcoin has fallen about 40 percent since its record high in October.

That decline began after Trump’s comments on tariffs sparked a wave of selling that “fried” $19 billion worth of borrowed-money bets (leverage trading) in one day. The market has not yet recovered from that blow.

This fall in bitcoin comes amid general turmoil:

– Technology stocks lose value.
– Gold and silver are slowly recovering after big falls.
– Oil is rising due to unrest in the world.

Data from the financial derivatives market (contracts that bet on the future price) show that investors are now betting more on a further decline than on growth. “Sentiment has bottomed out,” experts say, adding that investors are now scrambling to protect themselves from further losses.

Although large investors (institutions) have held on to some extent, small investors are pulling back. This happened after some of the biggest bitcoin holders sold assets worth billions of dollars.

Less well-known cryptocurrencies (altcoins) are in a particularly bad situation, having lost 70 percent of their value in a year. Even bitcoin-tracking mutual funds (ETFs), which ordinary citizens invest in, saw billions of dollars withdrawn during November.

“Bitcoin is still traded as a risky asset that reacts violently to every change in the market, rather than as a safe-haven ‘digital gold’,” concluded Morten Christensen of AirdropAlert.com.
