Italian financial police have broken up a network suspected of organizing prostitution and luxury night events aimed at wealthy clients, which, according to the investigation, included Serie A footballers.
According to Italian media, including La Gazzetta dello Sport, the clients reportedly include around 50 players from the top tier of Italian football, including individuals from Milan and Inter, although their names have not been released, nor are they under investigation.
The action was carried out by order of the prosecutor’s office in Milan, and four people were placed under house arrest on suspicion of organizing escort services and participating in money laundering.
According to police, the network operated under the auspices of an events agency and offered ‘all-inclusive’ packages that included dinners in luxury establishments, accommodation in high-end hotels and the company of women. Also on offer, it is claimed, was the use of nitrous oxide, known as “laughing gas”, for recreational purposes during private parties.
Investigators seized more than 1.2 million euros, which are suspected to be ill-gotten gains.
It is also stated that one Formula 1 driver is mentioned in the intercepted conversations as a user of the network services, but without revealing his identity.
The financial police point out that the clients themselves are not the subject of the investigation, because the existence of violence or other criminal acts on their part has not been established in the proceedings so far. The case nevertheless caused a lot of public attention and polemics in Italian football.
