Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. in Croatia this morning, where 3,762,224 voters in Croatia and abroad are electing the president.
Along with the current president Zoran Milanović, in the election race for the five-year presidential mandate are Most’s candidate Miro Bulj, independent Tomislav Jonjić, Ivana Kekin (Možemo), Branka Lozo (DOMiNO), Dragan Primorac (HDZ and partners), and independent candidates Marija Selak Raspudić and Niko Tokić Kartelo.
The Croatian president is elected by the majority electoral system, he must receive the majority of votes of all the voters who voted. If this does not happen, the two candidates with the highest number of votes go to the second round which takes place in 14 days, in this case on January 12, 2025.
A total of 6,755 polling stations are available to voters, of which 105 are abroad, 6,527 are regular in Croatia, and 123 are special, where seamen, prisoners and voters in social welfare institutions vote.
In contrast to the parliamentary elections, when voting is held abroad for two days, the presidential elections are voted for only one day.
The polling stations close at 7 p.m., and the election silence lasts until then.
The State Election Commission will announce turnout data at noon and at 5 p.m., and the first provisional election results at 8 p.m.
The work of electoral bodies in Croatia and abroad will be monitored by around 13,400 observers, the majority of whom will do their work in Croatia, only 25 of them abroad, in seven of the 38 countries where elections for the Croatian president will be held.
Since 1992, when the first direct presidential elections were held, Franjo Tuđman (1992 and 1997), Stipe Mesić (2000 and 2005), Ivo Josipović (2009), Kolinda Grabar Kitarović were elected president of the Republic of Croatia. (2014) and Zoran Milanović (2019).
