The district court in Berlin sentenced three men from Bosnia and Herzegovina to several years in prison for a particularly serious theft in a money transport company in Berlin-Lichtenberg.
Two brothers, aged 29 and 28, who worked as money counters in the robbed company, received sentences of five and a half, respectively five years and three months in prison. Their 37-year-old cousin was sentenced to four years and three months.
At the same time, the court ordered the confiscation of illegally acquired property benefits in the amount of 5.3 million euros. The men, as presiding judge Aleksandar Masuh said in the explanation of the verdict, “planned the crime as a family and acted like real criminals. The most severely punished 29-year-old “as the head of the shift” had the opportunity to open the safe.
According to the court’s findings, on December 21, 2025, the brothers packed the money in bags and took it out of the building. The relative helped to load the prepared getaway vehicle. Other family members were also waiting near the crime scene. While the brothers traveled to Bosnia and Herzegovina with 50,000 euros each after the robbery, the cousin was supposed to count the rest of the money and hide the loot.
According to the indictment, the money was distributed in side streets in additional getaway vehicles and temporarily stored in various places in Berlin, as well as in Brandenburg’s Bad Freienwalde.
In mid-January, investigators found and confiscated 2.15 million euros in the basement of a Berlin apartment building. More than three million euros of loot is still missing.
The three defendants, all from Bosnia and Herzegovina, admitted their participation before the court and apologized. The 29-year-old who received the most severe punishment stated through his lawyer that the company’s employees “from time to time fantasized about what would happen if they had at least a million of that money.”
He “indulged in those mind games”, he admitted in court. Where the relative had hidden the money, he could not say. On the other hand, the 37-year-old stated that two brothers took several bags full of money from him.
A month after the robbery, the 37-year-old surrendered to the police, while the brothers hid in Bosnia and Herzegovina for almost two months, and then returned to Germany.
Since their arrest, the three men have been in pre-trial detention. The prosecution asked for sentences between three and a half and six and a half years, while the defense proposed three and a half years each. The verdict is not yet final, they report Independent newspapers.
