The Belgrade Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office (VJT) announced that a barrel was unearthed in the area of Inđija, which, it is believed, could contain the remains of a man. killed recently in a Belgrade restaurantafter which the head of the Belgrade police and former adviser to Aleksandar Vučić was arrested.
The head of the Belgrade Police Department, Veselin Milić, was arrested on May 15 and the court sentenced him to 30 days of detention. He is suspected of having committed several criminal acts in order to cover up an attempted murder in a Belgrade restaurant and to prevent the elucidation of the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Aleksandar Nešović Baja on May 12, whom the media has linked to one of Belgrade’s criminal clans.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić he declared on Saturdaythe day after the arrest of his former advisor Milić, that it was an “extremely difficult case” for the state and announced the passing of laws and the sanctioning of police and army officials who protect criminals.
A body in a barrel
According to the announcement of VJT, a body believed to be the remains of the missing “AN wanted” was found in a barrel unearthed in the area of Inđija municipality, between Belgrade and Novi Sad, in the presence of public prosecutors, police and forensic experts.
He was reported missing on May 13, and according to the collected evidence, it appears that he was killed “in an insidious manner” the previous evening.
By order of the VJT, an autopsy and DNA expertise will be performed at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Belgrade.
The prosecutor’s office announced earlier that in this case, the investigation is being conducted against a total of 10 people. Among those arrested are four police officers, all of whom are suspected of various criminal acts related to serious murder.
Milić’s career and dismissal
The arrested Veselin Milić was the head of the Belgrade police from 2013 to 2018, when he was appointed as an adviser to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić for the fight against corruption and organized crime, and at that time he was also the assistant director of the police.
At the end of 2020, by the decision of the then Minister of the Interior, Aleksandar Vulin, he was again appointed as the head of the Belgrade police, only to be immediately dismissed on May 15 after the affair was discovered.
Dacic is silent
In the meantime, only Vučić and Police Director Dragan Vasiljević addressed the public, but not the Minister of Internal Affairs and First Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dačić.
Dacic’s conspicuous avoidance of public appearances, while the top of the department is facing one of the biggest scandals in recent history, was also pointed out by the parliamentary opposition, demanding that both Dacic and police director Vasiljević resign or be removed from office.
Dacic’s Socialist Party of Serbia has been the largest coalition partner of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party for many years.
